A note from SEEN founder, Dr. Iris Rubin:
As a curly girl myself I want it all: beautiful defined curls without the frizz and without compromising my skin.
For years, I was layering on products to tame my frizzy curls, without realizing that these products were causing breakouts on my face. As a dermatologist, I discovered that anything you put on your hair gets on your skin. And curly products can have so many ingredients that clog pores, leading to acne.
How does your curly hair product get on your skin? It can transfer directly from your hair to your face, and to your back and shoulders if you have long hair. And when you sleep, your face can be rolling around in pore-clogging ingredients on your pillowcase from your curly hair products!
Most of us curly girls are trying to reduce frizz, as well as hydrate and define our curls. But those same ingredients in our products that help our curls look beautiful can also cause problems for our skin. For example:
- Fighting frizz often involves oils, waxes, and other moisturizing ingredients. While not all oils are bad for the skin, many can clog pores.
- A lot of products may use polymers to provide hold for those nice defined curls, and some polymers can clog pores.
- Many products contain silicone, which can combine with other ingredients, potentially trapping them in the pores and clogging pores. Silicones can also build up on the hair, weighing your curls down. Since silicones are occlusive, they can block other moisturizing ingredients from penetrating the hair strand.
As curly girls, we deserve better: there is no reason why we can't have beautiful curly hair AND beautiful skin. It's time to elevate curly hair care to be luxurious, clean, vegan, cruelty-free, and non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and non-irritating. After 4+ years of development, SEEN Curly Creme has arrived! We hope you love it.
