What's your hair type?

What's your hair type?

Just like the skin, your hair has a “type.” At first you may be thinking straight or curly, but we’re actually talking hair type based on your scalp’s level of oil production. Yet it’s important to keep in mind that hair type can be dictated by a variety of factors, including genetics and hair thickness as well as environmental elements like climate, water quality, and even hormonal shifts.

For the sake of this discussion, we’re going to focus on normal, oily, dry, and combination hair—but keep in mind that your hair type can change. Hair type is predominantly determined by the amount of oil (sebum) that is produced naturally by the scalp. As a reminder, sebum contains a complex of lipids (fats) that are responsible for moisturizing, lubricating, and protecting each and every strand of hair. But when it comes to hair type, the amount of time it takes for the scalp to produce sebum after shampooing can be a reliable indicator.

As you review the ideal SEEN regimens for each hair type, remember ALL our products are available fragrance free.

Normal hair
As with normal skin, the scalp of those with normal hair produces just the right amount of sebum. Oil usually becomes apparent at the roots after two or three days. Normal hair is strong, soft, shiny, and easy to detangle.

Dry hair
As expected, dry hair doesn’t produce enough sebum to moisture the hair from roots to ends. (Curly hair tends to be dry because it’s more challenging for sebum to travel down coiled strands.) Without the protective benefits of sebum, dry hair is more prone to breakage, dull appearance, and rough texture. A lack of sebum can also lead to itching and flaking due to dry scalp.

Oily hair
The overproduction of sebum leaves hair greasy, flat, and sticky—and oil can become visible within a day after shampooing. If you have fine hair, it’s more likely to fall into the oily category. Also, oily hair is often associated with oily skin—so you definitely want to make sure ALL of your products are non-comedogenic. Add SEEN Face Wash and Body Wash to your routine for healthy-looking skin from head to toe without the worry of clogged pores.

Core SEEN products

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner (applied from mid-lengths to ends)

SEEN extras

  • Leave-In Conditioner or Blow-Out Creme/Curly Creme
  • Magic Serum (only a few drops)

Combination hair
Simply put, combination hair is oily at the roots and dry at the ends. Oily roots can be caused by a scalp that produces excess oil, or when curly or frizzy hair prevents oil from reaching the lengths of the strands and allows it to accumulate close to the scalp. The lack of oil at the ends (along with probable hair damage) contributes to the dry ends associated with combination hair.

The SEEN routine for combination hair

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner (applied from mid-lengths to ends)
  • Leave-In Conditioner or Blow-Out Creme/Curly Creme
  • Magic Serum

Just a side note… Any hair type can be damaged since the heat styling and chemical processing leave the mid-lengths and ends compromised (as opposed to the scalp).
