After a spectacular summer, (sadly) it’s time to set our sights on fall. Similar to preparing for back-to-school, now’s the time to get your scalp ready for the season ahead. With these tips from our founder, Harvard-trained dermatologist Dr. Iris Rubin, it should be smooth sailing.
Since the scalp is skin, it responds to its surrounding environment. Just like the skin, the scalp can be oilier in warm, humid weather and drier when it’s cold outside. The key for helping the scalp stand up to the chillier temperatures and blustery winds to come is to maintain the health of the scalp barrier and its microbiome. If you’re prone to “winter itch” and flaking, avoiding it may be as easy as fortifying the scalp now!
The scalp is home to 100,000 hair follicles that have an important job to do: Grow hair. Remember, the scalp can be compared to soil on a farm, because poor soil [scalp health] affects the quality of the plants [hairs] that grow in it. With that said, here’s Dr. Rubin’s advice.
- Choose haircare products that respect and support the scalp barrier. SEEN’s non-irritating formulas won’t compromise the skin barrier or the scalp’s microbiome.
- If you have an acne-prone scalp, look for non-comedogenic haircare products that won’t clog pores. (All SEEN products are free of pore-clogging oils and non-comedogenic.)
- Sensitive skin can benefit from haircare that’s free of many common allergens, including fragrance. SEEN is formulated without many common and emerging allergens, and our fragrance-free products have been awarded the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance™.
- Just like other skin, avoid too-hot water and shield the scalp from unprotected sun exposure.
A scalp-friendly haircare routine an ideal first step, but this special skin needs special support, especially to stave off (or improve) an already dry, flaky scalp. SEEN Restore Scalp Serum is formulated with Dr. Rubin’s favorite skin-safe hydrating ingredients (such as plant-derived squalane and olive-derived ethylhexyl olivate) along with soothing bisabolol. What makes Restore Scalp Serum different is its propanediol caprylate and an amino acid called sarcosine. These naturally derived “active” ingredients work to reduce the appearance of flakes, calm the scalp, and help optimize the scalp microbiome.
If you have sensitive, acne-prone, or eczema-prone skin, it might feel like too much to think about your scalp, too. The good news is, SEEN has your scalp, hair, and skin covered with non-irritating and non-comedogenic products that are all available fragrance-free. When used as a regimen, SEEN provides cleansing and care for the scalp, skin, and hair that all skin types and hair types can enjoy.
P.S. If your scalp doesn’t improve after switching products or making lifestyle changes, it's a good idea to see a dermatologist. It’s especially important to seek treatment for severe or recurring scalp conditions to prevent long-term damage that could potentially impact healthy hair growth.
