Sustainable Packaging In Haircare - The New Age Hair Revolution

Sustainable Packaging In Haircare

Our awareness and knowledge about haircare ingredients has increased exponentially over the past several years. We’re paying more attention to ingredient labels, and looking for haircare formulas that are safe for blemish-prone and sensitive skin—because haircare is skincare.

Harvard-trained dermatologist Dr. Iris Rubin created SEEN after making the connection between haircare products and breakouts. In fact, 70% of participants in a dermatologist-graded clinical study with body acne improved and 52% with face acne improved simply by switching to SEEN’s Shampoo and Conditioner*. Dr. Rubin also created fragrance-free versions of every SEEN product to ensure people with fragrance sensitivities have equal access to SEEN’s amazing hair and skin experience. The National Eczema Association has given its stamp of approval for all of SEEN’s fragrance-free offerings, and SkinSAFE has awarded our fragrance-free Shampoo, fragrance-free Conditioner, and Magic Serum its highest honor for sensitive skin safety.

SEEN’s mission is to deliver gorgeous hair and healthy skin, and to do so in a way that is friendly to the environment. We have an evolving sustainability agenda that continues to expand as more eco-friendly packaging options become available. We have been committed to offering clean, vegan, and cruelty-free formulas since day one, and our efforts have grown significantly from there.

We are happy to offer Eco-Refill pouches for our scented and fragrance-free Shampoo, Conditioner, Deeper Conditioner, and Body Wash. They use 75% less plastic (by weight) compared to traditional liter bottles, and can be used to refill regular-size and liter pump bottles.

SEEN’s Magic Serum and Restore Scalp Serum feature recyclable glass bottles, and our plastic bottles contain at least 25-50% post-consumer resin (PCR). PCR is derived from previously used and recycled plastic and replaces the use of “virgin” plastics, which are first-time processed petrochemicals. PCR offers a double benefit by reducing both the demand for new plastics (and the energy consumed in manufacturing those plastics) as well as the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills and oceans.

In addition, SEEN only purchases recyclable paper and boxes that are certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC). This means the raw materials are sourced from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally conscious, and economically viable.

We are also proud of our ongoing partnership with CleanHub, an organization that has built a network of projects that collect non-recyclable plastic. SEEN has been supporting a project called Green Worms, which collects household plastic waste door-to-door in South India since recycling is not available in these communities. Collections are coordinated by women-led groups, and this project provides 300 people with much-needed employment. With the help of CleanHub and Green Worms, SEEN met its 2022 goal of recovering 6,500 pounds of non-recyclable plastic. We set our sights higher for 2023 with a goal of capturing 7,800 pounds of non-recyclable plastic. For 2024, SEEN will strive to collect 10,000 pounds.

At SEEN, we’re committed to gorgeous hair and healthy skin without compromises—and this includes the welfare of the environment as well. We’re here to help you look and feel your best while doing better for the planet.

* In a dermatologist-graded clinical study, 27 subjects with mild to moderate acne used SEEN shampoo and conditioner as a regimen for 8 weeks. SEEN is non-medicated and can help those for whom hair products are contributing to acne.
